ON January 22, 1973 the US Supreme Court, by a vote of 7-2, declared that “ABORTION IS PERMISSIBLE UNTIL THE FETUS IS VIABLE.” That statement is a monument to stupidity. To demonstrate the stupidity of that statement, let us substitute three words with equivalent words. Let us substitute “abortion” with “killing”, because that is what abortion is. Let us substituted “fetus” with “human being” (not even person) because a fetus is a human being. And finally let us substitute “viable” with “living” because you can not be “viable” is you are not alive. Dead things are not viable. So that new statement is” “KILLING IS PERMISSIBLE UNTIL THE HUMAN BEING IS LIVING.” In other words, “it is only legal to kill dead things.” When is the Human Being viable? At conception. NO? You mean, when is it ‘viable’ on its own? And the answer is NEVER. No Human Being can ever make it on his own, whether he’s an embryo, a fetus, a new born, a ten year old, a 50 year old, an 89 year old. “Abortion is permissible until the fetus is viable.” Until it can live INDEPENDENTLY. That’s a fallacy, No one can live on their own. Think about it. Even that guy on the Discovery Channel who lives “alone” out in the wilds of Alaska, and builds his own cabin, and lives off the fish he catches: he does not do it, he can not do it, on his own. Twice a year a supply plane arrives to make a delivery! Adam could not make it on his own without Eve. He was not “viable.” He was depressed, dejected, and lost his appetite. “IT’S NOT GOOD FOR MAN TO BE ALONE.” This phrase “until the fetus is viable” is an expression of our cultures love for rugged individualism. It has opened a Pandora’s box and allows us to kill those who can not defend themselves: the weak, the crippled, the infirm, the unborn, and the elderly. It’s the law of the jungle. Might makes right. Terry Schiavo. Fr. Rocky's talk to Pro-life Wisconsin on 01/16/2010
