It is easy to deduce why I absolutely oppose human embryonic stem cell research. If we are going to pride ourselves on being people of equality, we can’t with our actions say that certain individuals (and modern science easily proves that these are individual persons) can be experimented on, damaged, and discarded simply because they are not as developed and “wanted” as we are. We ourselves would never want to be used for experiments without regard for our humanity. I am unashamed to support ethical adult and cord blood stem cell research, however. Amazing accomplishments have been made with research and treatment in these fields; it is very obvious that these advances provide more promise for effective medical intervention than embryonic exploitation. It is important to note that the reason that embryonic stem cell research initiatives need tax dollars to continue is because fewer and fewer private entities are willing to fund this experimentation due to lack of truly beneficial results. Harmful outcomes such as tumors have also resulted from this immoral experimentation. Thankfully advanced nutrition technology has also allowed researchers to witness the ability of the human body to develop its own stem cells when necessary in certain circumstances. I will support solid foundations for advancement in stem cell research that protect human dignity.
*Important note: at www.DoyleLawton.com , under “Governor Doyle’s Affordability Agenda”, they state, “Governor Doyle is committed to keeping Wisconsin the stem cell research leader – an exploding high tech industry that promises to bring millions of dollars and thousands of jobs to Wisconsin. The Governor has set a goal for Wisconsin to capture 10 percent of the stem cell market – which could create 100,000 jobs and generate $10 billion – by 2015.” It is unthinkable to end the lives of our tiniest preborn children in the name of "progress" and economic gains. In addition, it can be argued that these goals of economic reward from this research are unrealistic.
